Missing Bob Puffer

We arranged to meet at my cottage in two weeks’ time. That was last summer. Bob hasn’t been heard from since.

“He wasn’t initially invited to the Thousand Islands boys’ weekend last June; his enlistment was sort of an afterthought. Which was odd, because Bob was one of the wittiest, most sociable, and most gregarious people I knew. It was just that the nine 40-somethings from Toronto, Kingston, and Ottawa weren’t some close group of guys who kept in regular contact. Simply getting ourselves (without our families) to the Gananoque Town Dock to meet the boat on Friday was a big enough goal for most of us. Remembering to include Bob, the one bachelor in the lot, was almost too much.

But a few days before the boys’ weekend, I thought to call him up and invite him, and I’ll always wonder if I should have. It was the last time we saw him. Indeed, two days after that weekend was the last time anyone, his friends or family, saw him. Bob Puffer went missing in cottage country on the 26th of June, 2007.”

Writer Iain MacMillan reports on the disappearance of his friend, Haliburton cottager Bob Puffer, in the Summer 2008 issue of Cottage Life.
