Cottage Q&A

QUESTION

Is it legal to have a barbecue on a pontoon boat?

Lisa Gervais, Sudbury, Ont.

ANSWER

Yes, it is—as long as you follow common-sense safety precautions. Most importantly, the unit must be secured so that it can’t tip and be installed in a safe place away from machinery and in an open area so that no escaping propane can reach the bilge, inboard engine, or enclosed space. A safe bet is a barbecue designed for marine use. Found at marine-supply stores, they can be mounted securely on a railing or pedestal and have safety features such as securing lids that can’t fly off in a wind. Prices range from $150 to $400. Transport Canada safety regulations require that you use any barbecue according to manufacturers’ instructions and carry an approved fire extinguisher on board.
