Tips for safely pulling a trailer
When you hit the road with your boat, PWC, or other toy in tow, travel safely with these trailering tips
from the Ministry of
Transportation of Ontario.
- Ensure your trailer is registered and licensed before you use it on the road.
- Inspect trailer lights, tires, brakes, bearings, safety chain and hitch.
- Have two separate means of attachment between the vehicle and trailer.
- Safety chains should be crossed under the tongue to prevent the tongue from dropping to the road should
the primary hitch accidentally disconnect.
- Cover loose objects with a tarp and strap down larger objects so nothing will fly off when the vehicle is
moving.
- Keep the load low.
- Do not overload or distribute objects unevenly - this can cause swaying or separation.
- It is against the law to tow more than one trailer or to carry people in a house or boat trailer.
- Remember you’ll need more time to stop, so don’t follow too closely. Maintain a speed that avoids sudden
stops and slow-downs.
