TO JUMP... //Michael Chaves
Michael Chaves took this photo of his son Alexander, jumping into the Naiscoot River near Pointe au Baril, Ont., with a telephoto lens on his 11-year-old 35-mm camera. “I like to see the glee in his face when he jumps,” says Michael. “It reminds me of what it’s like to be seven again.
Judge's Comments: A great candid moment. Alexander is oblivious to the camera, and his momentum is evident, his whole body curved in the direction of motion. The photo is technically good, the action perfectly stopped, with sharp detail in the subject separating him from the blurred shore behind. We can feel he’s right at the height of his jump.

HIGH FLYERS //Sue Lodge
“The kids had been horsing around all day,” says Sue Lodge, who used the fast, sports mode on her digital SLR camera and took several shots of her nieces and nephews jumping into Lake Muskoka together. “This one caught the right moment and shows why we go to the cottage every year; it captured the mood of what we do in Muskoka.”
Judge's Comments: The tangle of limbs here conveys total abandon, kids going flat out, so much so that the edges of the shot can’t even contain them. The front girl’s expression says it all – a priceless mix of effort and excitement – and she perfectly frames the gleeful gesture of her leaping friend behind. A terrific burst of friends, youthfulness, and fun.
ACTION honourable mention

SURF’S IN //Dean Mulvenna
“It was just before the last light of the day and my son Evan was trying to get a little more skimboarding in,” says Dean Mulvenna about this shot, taken at Grand Bend, Ont., on Lake Huron. “I wanted a silhouette effect, so I panned along with him to get as little blur as possible.”
Judge's Comments: An ahh shot, if ever there was one. The waves keep rolling in and Evan looks as if he could ride them forever, he’s so balanced and relaxed on the board. Nice timing on Dean’s part: breaker, then roller, then surf, in equal parts. A perfect, carefree, sunset evening.
