THE NATURAL WORLD - first prize
GREEN LIGHT //Jamie Carlisle
“My girlfriend took me to see Sandy Lake, near Peterborough,” says cottager Jamie Carlisle. “It’s vibrant green because of the limestone bottom.” He planned to photograph this old boathouse alone until some ducks happened by. “I had to quickly cross the road to catch them in the shot. I think the composition worked well and I like the overall colour. The overcast day helped.”
Judge's Comments: What an unusual colour quality Jamie’s photograph has! If we hadn’t been told it was limestone, that overall green shimmer could almost be an infrared effect. We like the soft feeling; the tones and light give the shot the texture of a child’s fairy tale illustration. And the ducks cruising by at the right moment gives this lovely shot just that extra bit of life.
MORNING GLORY //Gilles St-Laurent
To take this long-exposure shot of a serene Lac Bob, Que.,
sunrise, Gilles St-Laurent used a wide-angle lens and a tripod. “There’s not too much activity that time of
day. It was gorgeous. The lake was like a mirror, there were birds singing, and the peacefulness was just
magical.”
Judge's Comments: A real example of the photographic art, this is a well-executed composition with great attention paid to the interplay of shadow and detail. The curve of trim on the canoe echoes the line of the clouds above. A raft sits entirely within the symmetry of the reflected horizon. It’s like a painting.
