KIDS ONLY first prize

...OR NOT TO JUMP? //Allyn Boyes
Osgoode, a golden retriever, was five months old when his owner, 12-year-old Allyn Boyes, captured the pup’s first tentative attempts at entering Seabright Bay in the Kawarthas. “He wanted to get in but wasn’t sure,” she says. Osgoode turned out to be a good swimmer. Allyn has been taking pictures for about four years, likes to shoot architecture and plant life, and calls this photo “The Land of Oz.”
Judge's Comments: This shot wins because it’s alive with anticipation and humour. Does Osgoode want to go in? (The front end says “yes,” the back end says “no.”) Great timing, and a nifty composition.
SKY IN THE WATER //Sydney Kate Snelling
“I like to take pictures of everything,” says seven-year-old Sydney Kate Snelling. Her mother, Susan, says Sydney Kate often takes the camera and goes off by herself at the cottage. She took this digital shot of clouds and trees reflected in Chandos Lake, Ont., because she thought “it looked really neat.”
Judge's Comments: The light is intriguing: Clouds are visible but the sky is dark, as if a storm is approaching. The shot is ambiguous, too – you wonder which way is up. It’s impressive for a seven-year-old to have an eye for such an undulating, almost Van Gogh-like reflection.
