Congratulations to the winners of our 17th annual photo contest!

LIFE AT THE COTTAGE - first prize

ANGEL AT PLAY //Janice Miller

This photo, taken on the Crowe River, near Havelock, Ont., sat in Janice Miller’s camera for several months. “When I finally saw it I said, ‘Whoa, is that ever a cool picture.’” Her daughter Laurel had been swimming with her brother over to a small nearby island. Janice says she’s famous for chopping heads off in photos. “I’m amazed when a shot turns out well.”

Judge's Comments: We were drawn, again and again, to the mysteriousness of this shot and the sweet, otherworldly look on Laurel’s face as the sun shines and bits of foam float. Strange, funny, and very, very arresting.

LIFE AT THE COTTAGE - Second Prize

CAUGHT ON FILM //Emma Brown

While visiting Kennebec Lake, Ont., Emma Brown enlisted her boyfriend and her brother to fish off the dock for her while she took pictures. “They were using a broken kiddie rod and had to bring the line up by hand,” she says. “I took about fifty shots, all different angles. This was my favourite one.”

Judge's Comments: This is an amazing photo you could never plan. The camera could have focussed on the bobber or the water, but it’s right on the mouth of the fish and those startling teeth. Add the exhilarating point-of-view angle, and this shot is one in a million.

LIFE AT THE COTTAGE - Honourable Mention

IN THE CARDS //Ross Costa

On a visit to a Georgian Bay cottage, Ross Costa spotted his friend’s daughter, Anouk, playing double solitaire with her grandmother on the screened porch. “I was in the kitchen and I liked the way the light lit her face,” says Ross. “And she didn’t know I was taking the photo, so her smile was very natural.”

Judge's Comments: A delightful image of a lazy afternoon. With all those layers of window, screen, and leaves, this shot has an incredible sense of depth. Ross was able to go unnoticed by Anouk, so she’s completely at ease. He also conveyed a whole card game with just one player. Wish we were there.
