Wenda Atkin spotted these baby foxes romping by an old building, near the St. Lawrence River. “These two were gently tackling each other when they looked right at me. They didn’t seem frightened,” she says, “but we stayed far back and I used a long zoom lens to get the shot. I knew it was a good one.”
Judge's Comments: An extraordinary capture of an extraordinary moment, showing the closeness and sense of play of littermates in the wild. We’ve never seen a photo like this before, in contest entries or from our own professional nature photographers. It’s unique. Kudos to Wenda for catching the moment without getting too close.
