Follow us on Twitter, @CottageLifeMag, as we tweet our way through the cottage season.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that millions of people are using around the world. Users can make text-based posts up to 140 characters (known as “tweets”) that are delivered to other users who “follow” them. Tweets publish in a newsfeed, and you can choose to either leave your posts public or make them private, viewable only by those you approve.

To get started, go to www.twitter.com and sign up for a free account. Then you can choose to follow @CottageLifeMag and you'll see tweets from us show up on your Twitter home page.

What are hashtags?

Hashtags make subjects easier to search on Twitter. They can be added to your posts (usually at the end) by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: # (i.e. #cottage, #hwy400). You can learn more about hashtags on the Twitter Fan Wiki.

Your Cottage Commute on Twitter

Why would I bother using Twitter? Here's the best reason: we're going to harness this technology to help make your cottage commute easier. As you head onto the highways, check Twitter on your mobile device for traffic updates from cottagers who are further up the road by doing a search on a relevant hashtag as listed below. If you see a delay, tweet about it and use a hashtag to let others know. Example "Hwy 400 at Severn Bridge down to one lane, about a 20 min delay. Bring patience. #hwy400"

#hwy401            #hwy115
#hwy2                 #hwy69
#hwy400            #hwy11
#hwy135            #hwy15

Got other hashtags for the routes in your area? Start using them and drop us a quick email and we'll update this list.

Hashtags only work if lots of people use them, so don't just sit back and read them. Contribute to the cottage commuter community out there, even if it's just to say "Highway 135 at Gull River is moving great! Cottage is only 15 mins away! #hwy135".
