Announcing the 2009 recipients

By Laurel Aziz and Tracy C. Read

The tradition of vacationing at rural and waterside retreats runs deep in the Canadian psyche. It’s fitting, then, that cottagers—often linked by generations of family history at their cherished getaways—are leading the charge to ensure that the places we all love will endure in perpetuity.

This year, we are again recognizing these environmental champions with the Green Cottager Awards. Our judging panel selected the award recipients for their exceptional leadership in launching initiatives that not only lighten our impact on cottage-country lakes, shorelines, sand dunes, and forests but also increase awareness about living in harmony with inspiring natural landscapes and wildlife. Our recipients aren’t changing their wilderness surroundings to suit their desires—rather, they have embraced their role as stewards, respecting and protecting what came before, rekindling their fundamental joy in these special places, then confidently passing the torch to the next generation.
