Take cover
It was around 5 p.m. after a hot day when Michael Evelegh captured this dark, dramatic scene in front of his Watabeag Lake cottage, near Kirkland Lake. “We could see the storm coming from across the lake. Everyone was packing up. I just started taking pictures.” The boat—covered in time for the downpour—belongs to his neighbour.
Judges’ comments
The selection this year was outstanding, but Michael’s shot gets top honours because he caught a moment
of stillness and striking beauty in a situation that is about to turn chaotic. The clouds are awesome; the
little boat doesn’t know what’s going to hit it. We wouldn’t be out there taking this picture. We’d be inside
the cellar with Auntie Em.
