News From Our Dock

May 2, 2008: Drum roll, please…

We’re delighted to announce that Cottage Life has been nominated for eight awards in the upcoming National Magazine Awards. The NMAs are handed out each year in June, and prizes are given to magazines across Canada in various written, visual, and integrated categories. We can’t take too much of the credit though. That goes to our fabulous contributors—they make us look good. Here’s a list of our well-deserving nominees:

  • In the How To category, Christine Langlois and Wayne Lennox for “Welcome to Hooterville” (May ’07)
  • In the Profiles category, Jim Moodie for “The Depths of Mary Sharpe” (Jun. ’07)
  • In Homes and Gardens, Paul Orenstein for “On the Edge of the World” (May ’07)
  • In Spot Illustration, Graham Roumieu for “Hottage Life” (Mar. ’07)In Still-Life Photography, Janet Bailey for “First Principles” (Aug. ’07)
  • In Service: Health and Family, Ray Ford for “Reclaiming the Cottage” (Jun. ’07)
  • In Service: Lifestyle, Ray Ford, again, for both “Are You Ready for the Next Big Storm?” (May ’07) and “It’s a Dirty Job But Somebody’s Going to Do It” (Jun. ’07): Three noms—way to go, Ray!

Congratulations to all, and best of luck! You do us proud, guys.

Meet the Editor
  Penny Caldwell
Penny Caldwell
Editor, Cottage Life Magazine

Penny Caldwell has been writing for Cottage Life since its inception in 1988 and been an editor with the magazine since 1991. She was appointed editor-in-chief in 2000.

A long-time cottager with a passion for boating, Penny spends as much time as she can on the water at her family’s off-grid, solar-powered, water-access cottage on Georgian Bay. She’s joined there by her husband, two teenagers, and a golden retriever named Taylor, who appeared on the cover of Cottage Life magazine’s special issue in 2002 celebrating the cottage canine.
