Winterizing the cottage
Air intakes for combustion
In a drafty cottage, as a woodstove burns it draws air from the room.

After you caulk and seal, however, the fire struggles to breathe. At some point, it will pull air down the
chimney, filling the room with smoke. You could open a window, but that rather defeats the draft-proofing. A
vent pipe from outside to the stove’s air intake or a floor register in front of the fireplace will keep the
fire on a cold-air diet, without losing precious warmth.
